Nigeria were denied a winning start to their Africa Cup of Nations campaign when Burkina Faso scored in the 94th minute to secure a 1-1 draw in Group C.

John Mikel Obi played the full 90 minutes for Nigeria - who had Efe Ambrose sent off - in a more advanced role than he is accustomed to at Chelsea, while our young defender Kenneth Omeruo - currently on loan at ADO Den Haag - was a second-half substitute, replacing Brown Ideye with 13 minutes remaining.

Emenike had given them the lead in the 22nd minute after he raced on to an Ideye flick and stabbed his effort beyond the advancing goalkeeper.

Clear-cut opportunities were proving hard to come by at both ends, although Uche came closest to doubling Nigeria's advantage with a powerful drive which flew inches wide.

Mikel could have put the game to bed with three minutes remaining when he fired over, and as the Nigerian supporters inside the Mbombela Stadium began to celebrate, substitute Alain Traore arrived in the box to give Burkina Faso a share of the spoils right at the death.

Victor Moses was an unused substitute and will hope to play some part in Nigeria's next group game against holders Zambia on Friday at 3pm (UK time).
