LADIES REPORT: EVERTON 2 CHELSEA 1

Chelsea Ladies fell to a last-minute defeat at Everton in the Continental Cup.

Both sides could have found the net during a lively opening. Everton striker Duggan evaded the Blues defence and diverted the ball beyond the out-rushing Shannon Lynn only to see it go wide.

Then we broke; England forward Eniola Aluko sprinting clear and having her shot parried by Rachel Brown. When the striker squared the rebound to Helen Ward it looked like she had a tap in, only for a Vicky Jones block to thwart her.

Duggan was next to go close with a stinging low drive which was destined for the bottom corner until Lynn saved impressively.

In the 34th minute, however, the Chelsea goalkeeper couldn't repeat that feat as Duggan met Alex Greenwood's cross at the back post. Lynn did get a hand to the header but could only help it into the net, giving the Toffees the advantage.

Two minutes after half-time, though, we were back on level terms. The impressive Aluko located Sofia Jakobsson in the box and although Brown got a touch on the Swede's powerful drive it wasn't enough.

The frantic action continued with Duggan looking most likely to score next. Her looping 57th-minute effort seemed destined for the top corner until it came back off the woodwork.

Next to go close for the hosts was full-back Greenwood, whose downward header after Michelle Hinnigan's free-kick bounced up and over the bar.

Substitute Simone Magill then looked set to make it 2-1 to the home team, only for Lynn to deny her.

When that chance was missed a draw looked inevitable, until a long ball over the top made its way to Jill Scott, who provided the finish to seal the win for the hosts.
