Having remained on the bench for the first two group games, Patrick van Aanholt was given a start in the Netherlands Under-21 meeting with Spain on Wednesday, but was on the losing side.

Both teams had already qualified for the European Championship semi-finals and the Dutch made 11 changes from their big win over Russia. Spain retained four players from a victory over Germany in their second game including David De Gea in goal and Malaga's Isco playing behind striker Alvaro Morata, who had scored the only goal as a substitute in the two previous matches.

Against the Netherlands, Morata and Isco put the holders 2-0 up before the break, with Alvaro Vazquez adding a third in stoppage time at the end of the match.

Van Aanholt, who spent last season on loan in his homeland at Vitesse Arnhem, played the full game at left-back.

By finishing second in their group, the Dutch now play Italy in Saturday's semi-finals. Spain face Norway who finished second in their group above host nation Israel and England.
