Having been part of a side which has kept five clean sheets in 10 games so far this season, Ashley Cole is well-placed to discuss our defensive merits.

Speaking to Chelsea TV, the full-back highlighted the benefit of familiarity in defence. He also stressed how it was up to the more experienced players to help the new arrivals settle in to the team.

'As a team we're defending a little bit better. We seem to know where each other is. I know where JT is and I know that Lamps is always going to be supporting in midfield.

'It's always nice to keep clean sheets. When you've got a great goalie behind you as well, if needs be to make great saves, then Pete is there.

'I've been playing with these guys at Chelsea for a long time now so of course you're going to get used to each other, but we also need to integrate the new players and show them how it's done.'

Andre Schurrle was particularly impressive in Tuesday night's 4-0 win in Romania, and Cole's proximity to the German on the left-hand side of the pitch makes him the ideal man to judge the winger's performance.

'Of course German football is probably different from English football, but he's come in and worked hard in training, and he deserved his place.

'Again he's showed what his capabilities are and how good he is, and for me he was one of our best players, if not the best.'
