After Mike Lewis voiced his concerns over the lack of progress in the Morfa Stadium development earlier this week, Swansea Rugby Club officials have now added their voice to the controversy - and claimed St Helen's was unsuitable for promoting the city's image.
The Whites spoke out in response to Lewis' comments, expressing the club's "dismay" that the council had yet to find a single commercial organisation prepared to commit itself to the £25million development.
St Helen's features prominently on television sports coverage, at home and in Europe due to the success of the club, currently Welsh/Scottish League champions, and the club said today St Helen's was bad for the image it presented of the city.Swansea RFC company general manager Byron Mugford told the South Wales Evening Post:" We anticipated making a move in September 2002 and it has yet to be confirmed. Any delay is disappointing.People no longer feel the standard we are offering at St Helen's is acceptable. We need a new stadium. It is not just about the club. It is about the perception people have about the city we live in."
