In our feature where we ask players to make selections based on their past, their recent choices and what crops up time and time again, in-form Olivier Giroud tells us about his footballing older brother who played alongside Nicolas Anelka, his passion for skiing, and a phrase Frank Lampard uses that got him thinking…

First: What was the first football kit you ever wore?

Maybe my brother’s France shirt from when he played with the youth national team. He played for France’s Under-15s and I was six years old. He was a centre-back.

He played with Henry, Trezeguet and Anelka! He was a talented player but he didn’t have a professional football career in the end.

Last: When was the last time you wore a football shirt of a team you weren’t playing for?

That’s a good question. Barcelona I think, when I was a teenager.

Always: What is an old football shirt you have kept?

Well the one from the World Cup final is the most important! I have a lot of kits from over my career, I have a nice collection.

First: What was the first thing you eat or drank this morning?

Water. Always water when I wake up. Very important for the stomach.

Last: What is the last thing you normally consume before bed?

Water as well!

Always: What do you reckon you eat most during the week?

Carbohydrates. And proteins also.

First: What was the first tattoo you had?

A tribal tattoo on my leg. After that I did Psalm 23 on my arm. After that a Polynesian one where every symbol signifies something. And after that my kids.

Last: What was the last tattoo you got?

A cross on my back.

Always: Have you ever had a tattoo removed?

No.

First: What was the first movie you really liked growing up?

When I was a kid my dad used to watch The Rock with Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage. I have seen it maybe 20 times. I know the words off by heart!

Last: What was the last film or TV programme you watched?

I love to watch TV series. At the moment I'm really into The Walking Dead.

Always: What have you watched most often in your life?

That’s The Rock also!

First: Where did you go on your holidays when a child?

I love skiing so when I was a teenager I used to go skiing a lot in the French Alps, near where I live.

Last: What is the most recent place you have visited for a break?

The mountains. Even in summer time also. There are a lot of activities there. Since I have been a footballer I most often go back to my home town, Froges – my mountains!

Always: Where do you go to most often?

That was also the mountains during the winter break.

First: Can you remember the first phone you owned?

It was a Nokia for sure, I think a 3210.

Last: What was the last app you installed on your current device?

Let me check...it’s a game for my kids! I have a lot of games for my kids on here.

Always: What do you spend most time on your phone doing?

WhatsApp.

First: Did you pass your driving test first time?

Yup.

Last: When was the last time you used public transport?

To go to the O2 Arena for Disney on Ice with my kids. We got the Jubilee Line. My kids love the tube.

Always: What music do you always listen to in the car?

I like different types of music. At Christmas I was listening a lot to The Best of Ray Charles. Also rock and roll like Elvis Presley. I also like house music, pop-rock, Coldplay, and also rap. A bit of everything! And French music also.

First: When was the first time you learned English?

At school when I started Year One, so I would have been about five.

Last: What was the most recent new word or phrase you learned?

To laud. I am Christian and I didn’t know laud. I would have said glorify. It is louer in French.

Always: What in English have you never get the hang of?

I still want to ask the gaffer when he says ‘first and foremost’. I have never asked but I believe it’s the first thing you need to do. Foremost I don’t know how to spell. He and Joe [Edwards] say it a lot, Joe especially on set-pieces. We have to stay focused!
