Stamford the Lion was a recent guest at Horley Infant School in Surrey, where he officially opened an all-weather playing surface.

The club mascot made a surprise appearance during the school's assembly before heading outside to cut the ribbon and official open the new playground.

Once opened, children took turns to play games on the new surface. Each activity was organised by Chelsea Foundation coaches and were aimed at teaching fair play and team work while also improving motor skills.

'The children loved meeting Stamford the Lion,' said Sussex and Hampshire development manager Daniel Jacquart.

'The Chelsea Foundation wants to be at the heart of the local community and help supports its schools and young people.

'A lot of these children haven't seen Stamford in action on a matchday and that's why it's great when we bring him along to events like this. It could be the closest some of these children have got to interacting with Chelsea and we aim to make each visit as special and memorable as possible.'

The Chelsea Foundation have been running after-school clubs at Horley Infant School since the beginning of November.
