John Mikel Obi will not be required for duty at the Africa Cup of Nations early in 2012 after Nigeria failed to qualify for the tournament.

A 2-2 draw in their final qualifier at home to Guinea did the damage, their opponents making it through instead.

It will be the first time Nigeria, twice winners, won't play in the biennial tournament since 1986.

The Super Eagles looked on their way when, after Guinea had taken a second-half lead, they scored twice but in the very final seconds of the game the away team levelled.

The Africa Cup of Nations runs between 21 January and 12 February. Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou's Ivory Coast, who play on Sunday, have qualified.
