It is not often Ashley Cole is upstaged when it comes to keeping goal-bound shots away from the Chelsea net, but John Terry has managed it in recent weeks.

Following the win over Portsmouth and a goal-line clearance made by the skipper at the cost of a painful collision, Terry was informed by Chelsea TV it was the fourth such block he has made since the beginning of December with Newcastle, Tottenham and Aston Villa the other opponents in question. The score was 1-0 against Portsmouth when he got in the way of Joel Ward's header.

'It is important I get there and cover,' he responded.

'Ash does the same and David [Luiz] the other side of me as well, and it was an important clearance, especially with the scoreline what it was. But we all do it for each other and Petr Cech made a great save initially. I just managed to get behind him which as a youngster you are taught to do. After that we kicked on and played some good football and got the goals we deserved in the second half.

'The one against Villa sticks in the mind more than the others because I thought I was unfortunate. I blocked the first shot and then [Stephen] Ireland managed to poke it though my legs, so I was disappointed with that one.'

Against Portsmouth Terry needed treatment after making his clearance but was able to continue playing.

'I have been struggling with the other knee but I clattered into the post with my right knee,' he reported, 'but all is fine. It's a little bit swollen but I am sure with the couple of days off we have it will heal.'
