Having won his race to be fit for the final and then played 120 leg-sapping minutes followed by a successful penalty in the shoot-out, David Luiz was needless-to-say elated after our Champions League triumph.

It was the first game for the Brazilian in five weeks following a hamstring injury but along with the rest of the defence and Petr Cech, he put in a sterling performance under relentless pressure from Bayern Munich.

'It was an unbelievable night,' David Luiz said. 'I am so happy and emotional and my team-mates deserve this. We have worked so hard all this season and now to win this big cup is fantastic.

'Roberto Di Matteo asked if I could help him and I said I will help you always, with one leg, two legs, or with no body. I will go on to my pitch with my heart and I ran for all the minutes.

'Roberto has been a fantastic coach,' he added, 'and Andre Villas-Boas deserves it too as he has worked on this Champions League, and he is a fantastic coach too.

'We have won two titles with Di Matteo and he deserves a great future.'

The Brazilian highlighted a unity in the squad that saw them overcome so many difficult obstacles on the way to our first lifting of this trophy.

'There was always belief,' he said, 'and this team plays together.

'I have fantastic team mates and a fantastic atmosphere every day in the training. The people outside always try to kill Chelsea - saying Chelsea is not a good team, Chelsea don't have the players, Chelsea are old players, Chelsea don't have good young players - but now we showed the world who is Chelsea!'
