CECH NAMED IN EUROPE'S TOP 10
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has been named as one of the top 10 best players in Europe for the 2011/12 season after he capped an impressive campaign with a heroic performance in Munich as the Blues lifted the Champions League.
Cech, who was tied in eighth place with Atletico Madrid striker Falcao, who he will face in the UEFA Super Cup on 31 August, was joined on the list by a familiar face in the form of former Blue, and the match-winner in Munich, Didier Drogba, who was named one place ahead in seventh.
On a night no Chelsea supporter will ever forget, Cech made a string of memorable stops during the game against Bayern Munich, before saving an Arjen Robben penalty in extra-time. He then made two further spot-kick saves during the shoot-out to put us firmly in the ascendancy.
Drogba enjoyed a wonderful run in last season's Champions League, turning in virtuoso performances against the likes of Valencia, Napoli and Barcelona, before scoring both the equaliser and winning penalty against Bayern Munich, his last game in a Chelsea shirt before he moved to Shanghai Shenhua in China.
The Barcelona duo of Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta, along with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, have been shortlisted for the prize, which will be awarded during the group stage draw for the 2012/13 Champions League on 30 August.
Votes are awarded by 53 journalists representing each of the UEFA member associations, with positions four to 10 already decided after each journalist provided a list of their top five players, with the first receiving five points, the second four points and so on.
In Monaco, the journalists will vote live, via an electronic system, in order to construct the top three positions.
