INTERNATIONALS: VICTORY BUT FRUSTRATION FOR YOUNG ENGLAND

Chelsea schoolboy Charlie Colkett was on-target for England Under-17s on Thursday afternoon but despite a win, his side did not make May's European Championship finals.

Colkett (pictured far right) was one of three Chelsea players involved in the match. Ola Aina, another schoolboy, played the first half and Alex Kiwomya came on in the second half. Ruben Loftus-Cheek remained on the bench.

The match against Slovenia at Burton was England's third and final match in a qualifying tournament. Colkett opened the scoring after 12 minutes, bringing the ball from halfway and exchanging passes before finding the net from just outside the area. England doubled the advantage when Colkett's corner was headed in but also had a man sent-off before the interval.

Slovenia pulled a goal back against the 10 men late on but with Kiwomya coming on for the final 10 minutes, England held on for the victory. However in a three-way tie on points at the top of the group, Russia's win over England earlier in the week ensured they went through.

Kiwomya and Loftus-Cheek will now join up with the Chelsea Under-19 squad for the NextGen games in Italy.
