Nathan Ake was part of the Netherlands Under-19 team that qualified in dramatic circumstances on Monday evening for the European Championship finals for that age group.

The 18-year-old has been in the Dutch midfield throughout a four-team elite qualification tournament this past week but having beaten the host nation Norway in their opener, Ake and his colleagues surprising lost to Cyprus and going into the final games all the sides were level on three points.

The Dutch faced the significant challenge of Germany and in stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes were drawing 0-0. With Norway Under-19s 3-0 up against Cyprus, the hosts were going through, but a 92nd-minute winner from substitute Thom Haye beat the Germans, sending Netherlands into the finals due to their head-to-head result against Norway.

The finals take place in Lithuania at the end of July with the draw on Friday. The Dutch and the hosts are joined in that by France, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Georgia and Turkey.
