INTERNATIONALS: CHELSEA LADIES IN ENGLAND LATE LOSS

Chelsea Ladies winger Eniola Aluko (pictured) was on target for England as they began their Women's Euro finals campaign on Friday evening, but the match ended in defeat.

Aluko, playing wide on the right, equalised Spain's early strike after just eight minutes. It was her 15th international goal but Spain took the lead again with just four minutes left on the clock, only for England to make it 2-2 from a corner with 89 minutes played, Birmingham's Laura Bassett the scorer.

However an injury-time own-goal from goalkeeper Karen Bardsley when the ball deflected in off her face denied Hope Powell's side a point. Aluko had been substituted on 73 minutes with Chelsea's Dunia Susi remaining on the bench.

England next play Russia on Monday with Chelsea striker Sofia Jakobsson likely to be in action for host nation Sweden on Saturday evening.
