CECH: BACK ON TRACK
Petr Cech has praised the collective reaction of the players for the manner in which we've bounced back from two defeats in the space of a week against Everton and Basel.
Jose Mourinho's side produced a ruthless display in Romania to beat Steaua Bucharest 4-0 courtesy of a Ramires brace, a Daniel Georgievski own-goal and a late Frank Lampard strike, securing our first three points in this season's Champions League.
The Chelsea goalkeeper, a virtual spectator for much of the match, felt we were good value for such a convincing win, but while much emphasis will be placed on the four goals we scored, he was keen to stress the significance of keeping a clean sheet.
'The way we played, both individually and as a team, was very nice to see,' he said. 'We truly deserved the 4-0 scoreline because we played really well, it was a great reaction after the first game and just what we needed. We went there to win, and we did, so we're very pleased.
'It was important to keep a clean sheet because you never know whether it will matter at the end of the group. Having lost the first game the group will obviously be tighter because we gave Basel a three-point advantage, but after the second round of matches everything is back to normal because they lost. A clean sheet is important for the confidence of everyone and of course for me as well.'
The win in Romania sends us into the upcoming double-header against Schalke in fine shape, and was the perfect response to our opening-game loss to Basel at Stamford Bridge.
Since that match, which came only three days after a 1-0 Premier League reverse at Everton, we've recorded wins against Fulham, Swindon Town and Steaua, while also earning a point away at Tottenham Hotspur, and Cech believes there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic looking ahead.
'When you have results like we did against Everton and Basel in the same week you wait for a reaction, and I think the reaction has been perfect,' he explained.
'Since then we've had some good games and good performances. I think you see the real strength of a team when something like that happens, it's been a great reaction from us and hopefully we won't need to react like that again in the future because we will get the right results in the first place.
'It was the most difficult moment of the season so far for us, losing two games in a row was something we didn't want, but we are now back on track and that's very positive.'
