Chelsea supporters attending our away Champions League match against Schalke next week may appreciate the following information:

Located in North Rhine-Westphalia, this region was formally the heart of German coal mining and heavy industry.The local population is estimated at 285,000 and while there are various hotels, they are somewhat limited and spread over this large area.

Distances from airport/arrival points to the city: Dusseldorf 33km, Essen 14.4km, Dortmund 38km, Koln 72km.

The stadium opened in 2001 and is a multi-purpose venue with a retractable roof and a pitch which slides in under the stand for matchday use. The arena is located close to the old Parkstadion which is now used by Schalke 04 as a training ground.

Match Day Transport
The stadium is approximately 7km from the centre of Gelsenkirchen and the two nearest town areas are Buer to the north and Zentrum to the south.

From Gelsenkirchen main station (Hauptbahnhof) take tram 302 towards Buer and the nearest stop is 'Veltins-Arena' which takes about 15 minutes. Additional trams will run on match day and the service is free of charge on production of a match ticket. The tram stop is about 5 minutes walk to the stadium and signage will direct Chelsea supporters to their entrance.

From Dortmund the local Stadbahn train takes approximately 40 minutes.

Stadium and Regulations
The visitors section will open at 18.45hrs and fans are advised to allow sufficient time for travel and entry procedures into the stadium. Chelsea supporters will be located in blocks V and W, which are in the lower tier in the south stand. Supporters will be required to scan their tickets at the turnstiles before being searched by stewards and then proceeding along a protected walkway which leads into the stadium. Exit will be via the same route.

Prohibited articles are similar to those in the UK and only bottles less than 0.5 litres will be permitted. No flags on poles are allowed and banners will be restricted to 1m x 2m in size. Refreshments will be available throughout in the visitors area but there are no cash sales. Items can be purchased with a 'Knappenkarte' card pre-payment scheme which costs 5 euros. Unspent money can be redeemed prior to leaving the stadium.

Supporters are advised not to bring large bags although luggage deposit facilities are available.

NOTE: Supporters will not be permitted entry if drunk and German law allows for persons to be breath tested at the turnstiles.

A short hold back at the end of the match might take place but if this happens it will be announced.

General security advice
The area is safe although the usual precautions in relation to keeping valuables and personal items secure in crowded areas should be followed. Passports should be valid for the period of the stay and adequate medical insurance should be obtained and EHIC cards carried.
