RADIO CLIVE'S FIVE: NEWCASTLE V CHELSEA
Throughout the season former player Clive Walker provides radio and TV commentary on Chelsea's games. Here he selects five aspects from our second league defeat of the season that caught his eye…
We have discussed for previous games the importance of the team starting the match with a quick tempo and often this season they have. On Saturday they didn't which was a surprise because Newcastle had played midweek with extra-time, eight of their players were unchanged and it was an early kick-off. It felt like Chelsea were in the driving seat before the game and we would have wanted to get at them, and for some reason we didn't.
Newcastle sat back early in the game and that might be because they were thinking they have to be careful, because they had played extra-time midweek, Chelsea hadn't and had made changes and would be quicker out the blocks. The home side did drop off and allow us to pass the ball around at the back and we never got out of a low gear. As the game wore on still 0-0, Newcastle slowly got more confident and they took their chances.
Chelsea did carry a set piece threat and Newcastle's defending of deadballs was all over the place. With a little bit more luck we would have scored with John Terry's header that hit the crossbar and that would have changed the complexion of the game.
We played some good set-piece deliveries in but so did Newcastle for the opener and we have seen players like Yohan Cabaye deliver this season. We are doing it to other teams but other teams are capable of doing it to us as well. When the ball in is good enough you hold your hands up because they are very hard to defend against.
Fernando Torres did not get the service he had in the previous games, but was that because he did not get into the positions or was the play behind him not as good? He was substituted along with Juan Mata and Frank Lampard, and Chelsea played with one less deeper midfielder late on, but we could not raise our game. After the final whistle, in commentary I said we have another game coming quickly and hopefully this defeat kick-starts another good run, as it did the last time we lost.
