THE CHELSEA WEEK HOME AND AWAY

Posted on: Mon 20 Jan 2014

The official Chelsea website checks on the progress of our players out on loan and looks ahead to the next seven days at Stamford Bridge...

Loan Highlights
Patrick Bamford scored the winning goal on his home debut for Derby County 16 minutes after coming on as a substitute. With his new side's game against Brighton goalless with under a quarter of an hour remaining, the young striker latched onto a loose ball outside the box and curled emphatically home with his left foot. Bamford joined Derby on loan earlier this month having shone with the MK Dons in League One, and manager Steve McClaren said that he 'showed great composure' in scoring the game's only goal. Derby remain fourth.

Patrick van Aanholt scored a last-minute winner for Vitesse Arnhem, away to Zwolle, to keep his side level on points with pacesetters Ajax following their first game after a winter break. In an eventful game, Christian Atsu struck the opening goal and Lucas Piazon missed a penalty before Van Aanholt's decisive late intervention.

Ryan Bertrand made his Aston Villa debut on Saturday evening, playing 81 minutes of his new side's credible 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield. The left-back has joined Villa on loan until the end of the season.

In League One, a man of the match performance from Milan Lalkovic helped Walsall to a 1-1 draw against George Saville's Brentford. Both players featured for the full 90 minutes, with Lalkovic assisting Craig Westcarr's equaliser. The draw leaves Walsall seventh, just outside the play-offs, and Brentford second. They face Gillingham at home this Friday night, live on Sky.

In Spain, Marko Marin came on with 25 minutes to go against an Atletico Madrid side with Thibaut Courtois in goal, and helped Sevilla pick up an unlikely 1-1 draw, with Sevilla levelling from the penalty spot not long after Marin had entered the fray. Atletico, the home side, missed an opportunity to go clear at the top of the table because Barcelona also drew 1-1, at Levante, making Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid the weekend's big winners.

Former Blues
Ricardo Quaresma returned to FC Porto earlier this month, signing on a free transfer following his release from Dubai outfit Al Ahli. The winger previously played for Porto between 2004 and 2008, and made five appearances for the Blues in a loan spell in 2009.

Champions League opponents
Galatasaray are still on their winter break, but they return to competitive action this Sunday, away to Gaziantepspor. They are second in the Turkish Super League at the halfway stage, but eight points off pacesetters Fenerbahce.

The Chelsea week ahead
There is another full week of training, with no midweek game, before we play Stoke City next Sunday at 3.30pm in the fourth round of the FA Cup. There will be the customary pre-match press conference on Friday.

Tonight, our Under-21 side travel to Telford to face Wolves, with kick-off at 7pm. You'll be able to follow the game on our @chelseafc Twitter account and read a full match report on this website later tonight.

On Thursday, Oscar and Willian will be signing official Chelsea merchandise at our Kingston store on Clarence Street between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

There is a special Burns Night dinner at Marco Grill Restaurant at Stamford Bridge on Friday night, with our former manager Tommy Docherty the special guest. You can still buy a ticket for the event, which includes a four-course traditional Scottish feast.

Then on Saturday our Under-18 side are away to West Ham United at 11am. They were without a game this weekend because the scheduled clash with Spurs was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
