THE CHELSEA WEEK HOME AND AWAY

Posted on: Mon 03 Feb 2014

The official Chelsea website takes a look at the recent impact made by some of our players out on loan, checks on the progress of our Champions League opponents and previews the week ahead…

Loan update
The club's latest acquisition, Kurt Zouma, was loaned back to St. Etienne after signing for the Blues last Friday, and the defender, 19, was in action at the weekend, playing in a 3-0 win over Valenciennes.

Patrick Bamford's season continues to go from strength to strength, with the young striker scoring his fourth goal in five games for Derby County at the weekend having only joined the Rams on loan at the beginning of last month.

Bamford was on target at St Andrews in a 3-3 draw with Birmingham City, dragging Steve McClaren's side back into the game and making it 1-1 from close range after his initial strike had come back off the bar.

It was the 20-year-old's second goal in the space of a week following his strike in their midweek win over Yeovil Town where Derby came from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

Bamford had enjoyed an impressive first half of the campaign on loan at MK Dons, and the step up to the Championship appears to be bringing the best out of the youngster.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Josh McEachran made his Wigan Athletic bow and endeared himself to the home supporters instantly, coming off the bench and laying on the equaliser for Marc-Antoine Fortune in their 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic.

McEachran produced a marvellous piece of skill to create the chance, running at the retreating Charlton defenders and sliding a stunning pass into the path of the striker who finished well.

Nathaniel Chalobah and Kenneth Omeruo were handed their first starts for Middlesbrough in a 0-0 draw away at Doncaster Rovers. Chalobhah started the game in central midfield, with Omeruo operating in the centre of defence, and both played their part as Aitor Karanka's side secured a well-earned point.

There was also good news for Todd Kane, who returned to the Blackburn Rovers starting line-up after a spell out injured which saw him miss both FA Cup matches against Manchester City last month. The young right-back completed the full 90 minutes and produced a confident display in a 2-0 win over Blackpool.

In the Barclays Premier League, Romelu Lukaku played no part in Everton's weekend win over Aston Villa having suffered an ankle injury in last Tuesday's 4-0 defeat at Liverpool. However, the club revealed the extent of the injury wasn't as bad as first thought, with the striker expected to be out for weeks rather than months.

Ryan Bertrand did feature in the game for Villa, completing the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 defeat. He also played the full game as they beat West Bromwich Albion 4-3 last Wednesday.

In Spain, Thibaut Courtois kept a 14th clean sheet of the season as Atletico Madrid cruised to a 4-0 win over Real Sociedad, but arguably the result of the weekend in La Liga came at the Camp Nou where Oriol Romeu's Valencia beat Barcelona 3-2.Romeu was impressive throughout as Valencia became the first side to inflict a home defeat on the Catalans.

Fresh from completing a loan move to Royal Antwerp in Belgium last week, Billy Clifford made his debut for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's side, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Lommel.

Former Blues
Former Chelsea Academy graduate Liam Bridcutt completed a move to Sunderland shortly before the closure of the transfer window. The Scotland international, who will work under the guidance of Gustavo Poyet, was handed an instant debut, and it proved an afternoon to remember as the Black Cats won 3-0 at the home of local rivals Newcastle United in the Tyne/Wear derby.

Champions League opponents
Galatasaray maintained their pursuit of leaders Fenerbahce with an emphatic 6-0 home win over Bursaspor. Roberto Mancini's side were 4-0 up at the break courtesy of a Wesley Sneijder hat-trick and an Emmanuel Eboue strike. Chelsea legend Didier Drogba made it 5-0 just after the hour mark before Selcuk Inan completed the rout.

The Chelsea week home and away
Jose Mourinho's side are in action this evening when we face Manchester City away in the Premier League, looking to become the first team this season to take points from the Etihad Stadium. You can follow the game via our official twitter feed @chelseafc and through the live matches section of this website.

We return to action on Saturday when we welcome Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge, kick-off 3pm. Last season's corresponding fixture ended 2-0 to the Blues, a game which will be remembered for Eden Hazard's first goal for the club and a brilliant Fernando Torres strike.

Mourinho will address the media ahead of the game, as usual, on Friday afternoon at Cobham.

Our Under-21s return to action on Friday night when we make the short trip to take on Fulham at Motspur Park, kick-off 7.05pm. The match will be broadcast live on Chelsea TV.
