Michael Essien kicked-off Chelsea participation in the midweek internationals as Africa met Australia in Shepherd's Bush on Tuesday night.

The result was a 1-1 draw. The Australians went ahead in the first-half at QPR's Loftus Road through former Portsmouth and Coventry striker John Aloisi. But when Middlesbrough's Mark Schwarzer dropped a corner 15 minutes from time, it left Junior Agogo with a tap-in to equalise for Ghana.

Michael Essien played the full 90 minutes in characteristically influential fashion and headed narrowly over with the game goalless.
