Ashley Cole has unveiled a tribute to a young fan tragically killed in a hit and run accident.

Liam Hannon was killed just over a year ago outside his home in north London as he was crossing the road to do his homework. He was 11-years-old.

Cole joined children from Liam's old schools, Childs Hill Junior and Hampstead Comprehensive, to unveil a memorial bench to mark the one year anniversary of his death.

The children at Childs Hill decided that a bench for the playground could represent Liam's personality and love of playing football with his friends outside in the playground. Liam was a huge Chelsea FC fan.

Past and present pupils took part in designing the bench and they were all invited to the unveiling yesterday (Monday).

The Chelsea and England left-back signed the bench which is decorated in blue and white and carries an image of the Chelsea home shirt.

Childs Hill headteacher Jayne Franklin said: 'It means so much to Liam's family that a Chelsea player has taken the time to attend our unveiling.

'To see Ashley Cole's signature every day on Liam's bench will be a permanent reminder of how a community can come together to celebrate a young person's life.

'We hope that Liam's younger brother will be joining our school in the near future and he will be able to take great comfort in sitting on this bench talking about his brother, his love of football and the way Chelsea took the time to come and remember Liam.'

Cole added: 'It is so sad that someone as young as Liam was taken from his family and friends in this way. Hopefully this small tribute from everyone at Chelsea can help celebrate his life.'

Chelsea has also donated a shirt which has been authenticated and signed by all the first team players.

The school will be organising a raffle in the New Year and the money raised will set up a memorial fund in Liam's name.

The fund will sponsor places at football schemes for children at the school who are not able to afford places.
