Michael Essien has been named the BBC's African Footballer of the Year for 2006.

The winner of the award was decided by a live vote during the BBC World Service's flagship African sports programme Fast Track.

The BBC specialises in coverage of the African game, including screening the biennial African Cup of Nations and a dedicated website.

Essien, nicknamed 'The Train' by Jose Mourinho for his non-stop drive and energy, impressed for Ghana in the World Cup as well for Chelsea this season.

He received 66 per cent of the vote - nearly twice as many votes as Egyptian Mohamed Aboutrika and our own Didier Drogba.
