Barcelona through the years

After being drawn against Barcelona in the knockout stages of the Champions League, we go down memory lane to find out what was happening in the world each time we've met the Catalan side before...

2000

Our first Champions League encounter with Barcelona came at the turn of the century, when we were drawn against each other in the quarter-final stage of the competition. After a 3-1 home victory, with Tore Andre Flo netting twice, we came unstuck in the Camp Nou in the second leg as the Catalans put five past us to record a 5-1 victory and win 6-4 on aggregate.

We lifted the FA Cup at the last ever final at the old Wembley, where we defeated Aston Villa 1-0.

2005

We made amends for that 2000 defeat to Barcelona, by defeating the Spanish side at the round of 16 stage in 2005 thanks to a thrilling second leg at Stamford Bridge. We slipped to a 2-1 first leg defeat in Spain but a John Terry header eight minutes from time ensured we went through to the quarter-finals with a 4-2 victory in west London, resulting in a 5-4 aggregate win.

2006

We actually faced off with Barca twice in 2006. The first came during the latter stages of the 2005/06 season, when we exited the Champions League at the round of 16 stage where a goal from future Blue, Samuel Eto’o, at Stamford Bridge proved to be the decider as Frank Rijkaard’s side progressed through the tie en route to winning the competition. The following season, but still in the calendar year of 2006, we were paired with Barcelona in the group stage, taking four points off our Spanish counterparts.

We went the entire season unbeaten at Stamford Bridge in the league, as we claimed a second successive Premier League title.

2009

Our 2009 clash with Barcelona at the semi-final stage is remembered as one of the most dramatic second legs ever witnessed at Stamford Bridge, following a goalless draw at the Camp Nou. Chelsea took the game to Pep Guardiola’s side and had four big shouts for a penalty turned down, before Andres Iniesta netted the vital away goal for the visitors with their only shot on target.

2012

Our most recent Champions League meeting with Barcelona came in 2012, as we recorded a famous aggregate victory en route to lifting our first ever Champions League trophy. We saw off the Catalans at Stamford Bridge thanks to Didier Drogba’s goal to take a slender lead to the Camp Nou but we reached the final following a 2-2 draw in Spain, with Fernando Torres scoring the killer goal deep into injury time.
