Five-star shows

In the 5-0 rout of Stoke City in our final game of 2017, five different Chelsea players got on the scoresheet in a league game for the first time since March 2014.

The list of scorers in our match against the Potters had a somewhat unfamiliar look to it, as Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta netted their first Premier League goals for the Blues while Antonio Rudiger notched his second to go along with strikes by Pedro and Willian.

It was the first time we have had at least five Chelsea scorers in a Premier League match since the 2013/14 season when a brace by Oscar and a goal each by Samuel Eto’o, Andre Schurrle, Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah secured a memorable 6-0 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

It nearly happened again in August 2014 when we beat Everton 6-3 at Goodison Park as Diego Costa (with two goals), Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic and Ramires found the net against the Toffees. However, Eden Hazard’s 67th-minute effort was ruled as an own-goal by Seamus Coleman meaning only four Chelsea players got on the scoresheet that day.

The drubbing of Stoke was the 22nd league match in which five different Blues have scored, dating back to our inaugural season when goals by Jack Kirwan, James Robertson, Frank Pearson (two), Martin Moran and John Tait Robertson gave us a 6-0 win over Blackpool in Division Two on 6 January 1906.

Seven of those games were in the old Division Two while 15 have been in the top flight with six in Division One and nine in the Premier League.

The first of those five-star Premier League displays was in March 1997 when Gianfranco Zola, Frank Sinclair, Dan Petrescu, Mark Hughes (two) and Roberto Di Matteo tallied in a 6-2 win over Sunderland.

It happened twice in our Double-winning season in 2009/10 when we beat Sunderland 7-2 in January with braces by Nicolas Anelka and Frank Lampard and a goal each by Florent Malouda, Ashley Cole and Michael Ballack, and hammered Wigan 8-0 in our final game with a Didier Drogba hat-trick, another Anelka brace and one each by Lampard, Salomon Kalou and Cole.

Another 8-0 win in December 2012 produced a club record as seven different players found the net against Aston Villa – Fernando Torres, David Luiz, Ivanovic, Lampard, Ramires (two), Oscar and Hazard.

We don’t have to go back too far to find our last five-star showing in the Champions League as we trounced Qarabag 6-0 at the Bridge last September with goals by Pedro, Zappacosta, Cesar Azpilicueta, Tiemoue Bayakoko and Michy Batshuayi.

It happened most recently in the FA Cup in February 2016 when Diego Costa, Willian, Gary Cahill, Hazard and Bertrand Traore scored in the 5-1 victory over Manchester City.

And while you have to go back to the 2012/13 season to find the last time it happened in the League Cup, we did manage it three times in that campaign as we beat Wolves 6-0 in the third round, Manchester United 5-4 in the fourth round and Leeds United 5-1 in the quarter-finals.
