Foundation joins with local college

The Chelsea Foundation will link up with Thomas Bennett Community College, Crawley, from September to launch a brand new football academy in the area.

The academy programme based at the school is a full-time course for sixth form students, which incorporates both full-time football training with post-16 studies, with the first course beginning later this year.

The course will provide an opportunity for students to develop their football ability in a professional-style football environment. The programme aims to fulfil students' playing potential while meeting their educational needs with the potential of undertaking qualifications in sports and coaching.

The academic BTEC Level 3 Diploma qualifications (equivalent to three A-levels) will run alongside the practical football-based element adding specialised units, such as nutrition and anatomy, which can help students progress into the sport and leisure industries.

Nick Brown, Chelsea Foundation's development officer for Sussex and Kent said: 'We are delighted to be working with Thomas Bennett in this way and collaborate to help further develop football in the Crawley area.

'UEFA qualified coaches will work with players to coach and manage all squad members in sessions and in a competitive league with both development and success on the agenda.

'Differing systems of play, opposition analysis and individual player feedback will all create an environment designed to mature not only the player's ability but their mental and social approach to the game.'

All coaching and matches are delivered by experienced Foundation coaches with teams competing in U19s leagues to help them transfer their learning into real game scenarios.

Students interested in coaching will also have the opportunity to volunteer with the Chelsea Foundation and gain experience to potentially take up coaching roles within the organisation.

'We are delighted to launch this new course at Thomas Bennett Community College,' said academy director for the scheme Chris Jones.

'The Chelsea Foundation will provide opportunities not only to further their football achievements but into coaching and football-specific higher education routes which is a key part of the provision.'
