The opening session of our European training camp is complete, with Jose Mourinho afforded the opportunity to watch three of our new signings in action for the first time.
Austria is our home for the first week of the trip, with sessions split between the Waldarena training base, situated in the middle of a picturesque forest in Velden, and the Klagenfurt stadium.
The players arrived at the Waldarena this evening (Monday) under blues skies but before long the heavens opened and it did not stop raining until near the end of the session, which lasted around an hour and a half.
The wet conditions did not prevent a high-tempo session which involved our recent acquisitions Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Filipe Luis. Also present for the first time this summer were Gary Cahill, Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta, all back from World Cup duty, and a number of the youngsters that featured in the recent wins at Wycombe and Wimbledon.
Initially fitness coach Chris Jones led an extensive period of stretching before the squad took part in some intense drills which included small-sided games with the focus on quick passing and finishing.
That theme continued as the outfield players moved to an adjacent pitch to work on their passing. The entire group of 26 then came together again with all four keepers involved in a drill played out on half the pitch. Again the emphasis was on moving the ball quickly, under pressure from both team-mates and a lack of space.
The closing stretches were undertaken in the dry amid bluer skies. The players and management will return to the Waldarena tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, for the first of two sessions. Afternoon training will be at the Klagenfurt stadium, where we play the first game of our two-week European stay, against WAC RZ Pellets, on Wednesday evening.
