Monaco hosted the proceedings on Thursday afternoon with the Blues among the eight top-seeded clubs.

German side Schalke, whom we faced in last season’s group stage, were in Pot 2 containing the next eight teams ranked by UEFA coefficient, with Sporting coming out of Pot 3 and Maribor from Slovenia from the last eight clubs drawn.

While Schalke are familiar opponents, with Chelsea recording two 3-0 wins against them last season and a 2-0 home win and a 0-0 draw in Gelsenkirchen back in the group stage in 2007, we have not played a competitive game against Sporting Lisbon previously. They came second in the Portuguese league last season, their first top-two finish since 2009.

Maribor are also new to us. The team from Slovenia’s second largest city, and conquerors of Celtic in a qualifier this week, are in the group stage for the second time in their history.
