In the latest instalment of our feature digging into the photo archives to pick an image to air once again, and with the team having taken a first step towards Wembley at the weekend, we keep the FA Cup theme going…
His dining rooms in Chalk Farm in north London may have been closer to Arsenal’s Highbury than to Stamford Bridge, but Mr Roger the proprietor who is pictured making a special offer is clearly a Chelsea fan, or else he could sense it would be another 31 years before we lifted the trophy for the first time and his takings would not suffer.
Back in 1939 when this photo was taken, we did beat Arsenal at the third-round stage of the FA Cup but slipped up in the quarter-finals at home to Grimsby. Portsmouth won the Cup that year and would remain holders for seven years due to the Second World War.
