Ladies pre-season: Chelsea 1 Kristianstads 0

Erin Cuthbert scored the winner as Chelsea Ladies closed out their pre-season with a hard-fought win over Kristianstads at Wheatsheaf Park.

The game's only goal came late on and was netted by new signing Cuthbert, who was teed up by fellow substitute Karen Carney, and it was richly deserved after an impressive display by the Blues.

With many of our players having been away on international duty until the end of the week, manager Emma Hayes named an all-English outfield, with Hedvig Lindahl the lone overseas player between the sticks and coming up against her former side.

Although the first half finished goalless, the better chances were fashioned by the Blues and Beth England, excelling as a right wing-back, forced a good save from the goalkeeper and Drew Spence was unfortunate not to turn an even better chance home from close range.

Despite a number of a substitutions taking place in the second half, Chelsea remained the stronger team and the goal our performance deserved eventually arrived from Cuthbert, who joined the club from Glasgow City in the winter transfer window.

An excellent move saw Gemma Davison play in Carney down the right-hand side and the England international squared the ball for Cuthbert to slot home at the back post from six yards out.

The victory ensures Hayes's side head into next Sunday's Women's FA Cup match against Doncaster Rovers Belles at Wheasheaf Park unbeaten in 2017. Our pre-season schedule concludes with wins over Hyundai Steel Red Angels, Fortuna Hjorring, LSK Kvinner and now Kristianstads, plus a draw against Rosengard.
