Young footballers from across Asia came together in Thailand last week for the Chelsea FC Foundation Asia Cup.
Held at our Foundation International Development Centre in Bangkok, the tournament united players from Taiwanese team, AC Academy and other Thai academies as they tested their skills against players from the Chelsea Foundation programme in the city for a fun-filled day of good competition and high football drama.
The Asia Cup is a unique event delivered by Chelsea Foundation coaches to help increase opportunities for young players across the region and to allow them to challenge themselves against new and exciting opposition.
The tournament came to a pulsating end as AC Academy went on to win the CFC Asia Cup Plate trophy in a hard-fought victory against Chelsea FC Bangkok U15’s, while the Asia Cup final was decided by a penalty shoot-out with Traill eventually running out 5-4 winners against Thai Bev.
It wasn’t just the players who were given the opportunity to develop and showcase their talents, as Chelsea Foundation coaches delivered a series of coach education workshops to help local and international coaches with the aim being to increase their knowledge of the coaching process.
Steven O’Reilly, football development officer for the Foundation in Bangkok, said: ‘It was a great way to kick off the new season and also a real pleasure to host the second Asia Cup here in Thailand with the support of our partner, NIST International School.
‘The tournament was very successful and players worked extremely hard with some fantastic skills on display. Players and coaches enjoyed themselves throughout, showing lots of energy which is great to see.’
Following this tournament is the return of the CFC Youth Development League which will run for its second year, supporting the local Thai community and providing local youngsters with the chance to be crowned Champions of Thailand.
The Asia Cup also comes hot on the heels of the recent Chelsea Foundation Asia Tour Cup, which saw teams from all our Soccer Schools in the region take part during the first team’s visit to Singapore.
