Chelsea TV exclusive: Rudiger on season’s start

Antonio Rudiger, an ever-present in our Premier League games at the start of his Chelsea career, believes the defensive side of the team’s display against Everton set a good standard to follow in the coming weeks of the season.

The summer signing from Roma is now away on international duty with Germany but before he departed he played his part in the clean sheet and the 2-0 win against the Toffees. He confirmed to Chelsea TV that he was pleased with that performance.

‘Of course, because in the first game at home we conceded three goals and we were not happy with this,’ said Rudiger.

‘We improved against Tottenham and we were unlucky that Michy Batshuayi scored an own-goal, but he took responsibility, and against Everton, with the clean sheet, everyone is happy. We took the three points and this is very important.

‘If you look at the [league] table now it is good. It was a pity we lost the first match but now we did good and won our last two matches and we have to continue after international duty like this, because Everton was a really good game.’

Rudiger and the rest of the Germany squad take on Czech Republic tomorrow (Friday) and Norway on Monday, both games World Cup qualifiers.

‘I am happy to see my family and then I am concentrating on the national team, and then I come back to Chelsea and we have a lot of tough games,’ he said.
