Emenalo: Hayes a huge asset

Michael Emenalo has praised the ‘outstanding’ work of Emma Hayes following the news that the Chelsea Ladies manager has signed a new contract with the Blues.

It was announced yesterday Hayes had committed her long-term future to the club by putting pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal, a huge boost given the team’s superb start to the season both domestically and in Europe, where we recently beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Since taking charge of the Ladies in 2012, Hayes has guided her team to success in the FA WSL, FA Women’s Cup and Spring Series, as well as securing Champions League football in three consecutive years.

‘Emma has already had a long stay with us and hopefully she will go on to stay for a very long time,’ said Emenalo. ‘The reason we are very excited is because of what she brings to the programme; she’s very experienced, very knowledgeable and she cares.

‘She’s one of those outstanding professionals who has spent time to develop her craft and find new ways to continue to be consistent in order to have success. She’s been absolutely brilliant with the Ladies.’

The Blues have enjoyed a fantastic start to the new season, winning all three FA WSL games without conceding a goal, and we now face Swedish side Rosengard in the last 16 of the Champions League following our dramatic win over Bayern Munich [pictured above].

With Hayes at the helm, and a hugely talented group of players at her disposal, Emenalo believes we can go on to become the best team in Europe.

‘Emma is very ambitious and I’m sure she wants to win everything,’ he said. ‘We also understand it’s an ascending project and we have to give it some time, but this is Chelsea Football Club and we raise the bar as high as possible.

‘She’s done terrific already with a Double and different trophies, and now we hope within this period we’ll get the Champions League.’

Emenalo also spoke about the significance of the Ladies’ move to Kingsmeadow, their new home stadium, and the professional environment they now work in on a daily basis.

‘What we set out to do at this football club now is to ensure every facet of the club is as professional as can be, and I think the Ladies deserve to have a professional backdrop for their technical development, which they have now,’ he said.

‘The atmosphere there is fantastic, the pitch is great. I went there with my kids to watch them against Bayern Munich and I felt very proud of what we have going on.’
