Internationals: Morata scores, Danes held

There were wins for Spain, Czech Republic and two young England sides, and three Chelsea players were among the goals in Saturday’s internationals.

Having scored a brilliant winner for the Blues against Manchester United last weekend, Alvaro Morata was on target again this evening, netting for Spain in a comfortable 5-0 friendly win over Costa Rica.

Morata started the game up front for Spain and made it 2-0 after Jordi Alba had fired them into an early lead. The Chelsea striker’s goal arrived in the 23rd minute when he reacted quickest to pounce on a loose ball inside the box and fire home.

Six minutes before the break he produced a lovely piece of skill to burst away from two defenders before his strike was saved, and he was denied once more just before the break. Morata was replaced by Iago Aspas at half-time.

Denmark were held to a goalless draw at home by Republic of Ireland in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off. The hosts looked the side most likely to make the breakthrough but it’s all to play for ahead of Tuesday’s second leg in Dublin. Andreas Christensen was an unused substitute.

Elsewhere, Tomas Kalas played the full game for Czech Republic as they beat Qatar 1-0 in a friendly. Antonin Barak scored the only goal of the game in the 15th minute.

Mason Mount [pictured below] scored a stunning free-kick for England Under-19s in their 2-1 European Championship qualifying win over Iceland.

The midfielder, currently on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, was one of three Chelsea players to start for England, along with Dujon Sterling and captain Trevoh Chalobah, and Mount broke the deadlock 20 minutes from time with a wonderful dipping free-kick which curled in at the near post.

Iceland looked to have earned a point when they equalised late on, but England hit back immediately and restored their advantage with what proved to be the decisive goal, scored by Eddie Nketiah.

The result means England have secured their place in the Elite Round of qualifying, which begins in March, and a win over Bulgaria in their final game would guarantee top spot in the group.

Clinton Mola scored for England Under-17s as they came from behind to beat 10-man Russia 2-1 at the Pirelli Stadium this afternoon.

The visitors raced into a shock lead after just 12 seconds when Maksim Kutovoi scored from the penalty spot after Ethan Laird had fouled Llia Vortonikov.

Russia were reduced to 10 men shortly before the break when Dmitry Markitsov was shown a straight red card following an off-the-ball incident, and early in the second half England were back on level terms as Chelsea striker Mola fired through a crowded penalty box to make it 1-1. The winning goal arrived seven minutes later courtesy of Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood.
