Mario Pasalic, the young midfielder currently on loan to Russian Premier League side Spartak Moscow, helped Croatia take a big step towards taking part in the World Cup finals in Russia with a win on Thursday night.
He came on in the 89th-minute of their home first-leg qualification play-off against Greece which ended 4-1 in their favour. Pasalic replaced Real Madrid’s Luka Modric who had opened the scoring from the penalty spot, with further goals coming from Fiorentina’s Nikola Kalinic, Inter’s Ivan Perisic and former Leicester player Andrej Kramaric who scored from an erroneous back-pass.
Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos had briefly given the Greeks hope when he made it 2-1 but they have it all to do in Sunday’s second leg.
In a friendly international tonight, Marco van Ginkel was an unused substitute as the Netherlands beat Scotland 1-0 away. Memphis Depay scored the goal.
