Foreword by chief executive Peter Kenyon:
At Chelsea Football Club we are incredibly proud of our Football in the Community (FITC) department and the work they do.

Every year more than 200,000 children from all social classes and backgrounds participate in the wide variety of schemes and programmes run by our dedicated FITC coaches and staff, both full-time and part-time. In isolation, this is already a big achievement. But at our club, the FITC department does not work on its own. As each year goes by it is becoming more integrated into every aspect of Chelsea FC.

Most importantly it is now a core element of the club's corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy.

In January 2007, Chelsea will produce our first ever CSR report, which will cover the 2005/6 season. That report will demonstrate how our FITC department is engaged with nearly all the charitable, community and other social responsibility programmes and commitments Chelsea has made.

CSR is an integral part of our vision for the club. Not only do we want to be a successful team on the field, but we also want to make a difference off it. We want Chelsea to be seen as a social leader, as well as an industry leader, through an identifiable series of programmes that create a legacy at home and abroad.

Our FITC team is critical to this. As well as its core schools coaching programmes in London, Cobham and Sussex, it works in the areas of social inclusion, crime prevention, job creation, car crime, drugs and weapons awareness, and anti social behaviour.

Most of this work is done in highly deprived areas of London, such as inner city housing estates, where these issues are most acute. Also as Chelsea continues to develop globally, so will our FITC programmes. In the future the club will have a global charity partner and the FITC team will be involved in those communities targeted by by both our global partners and local partners in countries like the United States and China.

Chelsea, our players and our management, are totally committed to promoting our FITC team and the fantastic work it does. But the work does not stop, and it will continue to develop and grow.

Quote from John Terry, Patron of Football in the Community

"I am proud and honoured to become the official patron of Chelsea's Football in the Community Scheme. From an early age growing up on the Thames View Estate in Barking, football has been my life. The Football in the Community Scheme at Chelsea runs many great projects and activities which enable young people to be part of the club, from Soccer Schools and In School Coaching to working on housing estates. They enable youngsters to get some focus in their lives; they really do make a difference! I appreciate how hard things can be in everyday life and some of the dangers young people come up against, this is just one of the reasons I was excited at working alongside the community scheme. Now I feel it is my turn to give something back."
