EURO 2008: TOP MAN MICHAEL
Michael Ballack has been declared official Man of the Match for Germany's win over Austria last night, the second occasion a Chelsea player has won the commendation during Euro 2008.
Claude Makelele was the other Blue selected, for his performance in France's 0-0 draw against Romania on 9 June.
The awards are made by Uefa's Technical Team, including former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh and former Aston Villa coach Jozef Venglos, taking into account a vote via the Euro 2008 website.
'The game was even, the Austrian team were working hard and pushing, but the winning touch was in the boot of Ballack - his excellent free-kick was the difference,' stated Venglos, who has also managed Czechoslovakia.
Ballack covered the longest distance run by any of his team in the game (11.161km) and although only a draw was required by Germany, the Chelsea midfielder's strike insured against slip-ups and set-up a mouthwatering quarter-final against Portugal.
'I know several players from Portugal from Chelsea. They are very good individually, they play well offensively and don't focus too much on defence,' Ballack said, looking ahead to Thursday's game.
'They're a great team, not least because of Ronaldo who's had a great season in England.
'It will be a difficult game but both teams are capable of going far. They [Portugal] are probably favourites but that may favour our game.'
Tonight in Zurich, Makelele, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka will be seeking to join Ballack, Paulo Ferreira, José Bosingwa, Khalid Boulahrouz and Luiz Felipe Scolari in the last eight.
France must beat Italy and hope Romania fail to win against The Netherlands, the Dutch already guaranteed top spot.
Bookmakers Paddy Power make Michael Ballack 8/1 to repeat Monday's feat and score first in the Germany v Portugal game.
