FOOTBALL FIRST
The emphasis was firmly on football as the first team squad continued their pre-season preparations at Cobham today (Wednesday).
Long endurance runs were put to one side in favour of more ball work and some short sprinting routines as the first match of the calendar nears - a friendly with Guangzhou Pharmaceutical in China on July 23.
Involved in the session were four Chelsea youngsters - Michael Mancienne, Miroslav Stoch, Gael Kakuta and Sergio Tejera - and they took their chance to impress watching manager Felipe Scolari and his staff.
Speaking exclusively to Chelsea TV following the session, Slovakian winger Stoch said: 'It was a good experience for the young players and we have to learn from the big stars.'
After a warm-up, the players worked in pairs on their one-touch game, practicing short volleys and passes, mixed with short, sharp shuttle runs.
The goalkeepers worked separately, and were put through their paces individually, while Michael Essien and Florent Malouda, who both returned to training this week, worked together on their fitness.
The main group finished the session with a full-sided practice match, allowing the players to show their abilities. Both Deco and Frank Lampard impressed, the former with his close control and clever movement, the latter with his range of passing.
Sergio Tejera also demonstrated what he could do with some intelligent play in the centre of the park.
There was a little time to work on set-pieces, with Branislav Ivanovic heading home a corner, before the session was over.
This afternoon José Bosingwa will be presented to the media at Cobham, with coverage to follow here on chelseafc.com.
Chelsea TV will also be covering the unveiling of the Portuguese international, and you can see that, as well as what went on at Cobham, in Blues News from 6.30pm.
