Michael Essien believes the heat and humidity experienced in China will stand us in good stead when the Premier League season kicks off.

The Ghanaian international is used to such climes having taken part in African World Cup qualifiers over the summer, yet he believes the conditions in the Far East are even more extreme than his home.

'It's more than Africa here, it's good for our conditioning and I am sure it will have helped us by the time we get back home,' he said, before admitting that the trip is having some effects on his regular patterns.

Renowned for his ability to sleep, Essien had a revelation for supporters.

'I'm not sleeping well at all,' he explained. 'I don't know why, it might be the time difference, and it's causing me a little bit of trouble.

'I didn't sleep on the plane out here too well either because I don't like flying, so I can't really sleep.'

Fortunately it didn't affect Essien's performance against Guangzhou Pharmaceutical on Wednesday, and he is hoping for a similar display against the Chengdu Blades this evening.

Playing in a midfield four, Essien was given licence to get forward and attack as well as fulfilling defensive duties, a role in which he shone.

'Yes, the boss allowed us to go forward when we had the ball, and then when we lose it we get back quickly. It is a very interesting formation, and with quality players it worked very well.

'Maybe now I will practice a few more shots, my shooting isn't so good so it would be nice to take some chances from far out,' he said, no doubt thinking of his 2006/7 Goal of the Season against Arsenal at the Bridge.

Finally, there was a quick word on his new contract.

'I feel really good, I came here to stay for a long time,' he smiled.

'When the club came to me it was an easy decision because I love Chelsea and have always felt at home here from as soon as I arrived.'
