Felipe Scolari used his final few minutes in Malaysia before flying to Moscow to explain his thought process over the pre-season.

Already the Chelsea manager has indicated he knows the majority of the line-up for his opening Barclays Premier League game, but he has still been experimenting and drawing conclusions, and that includes in the win in Kuala Lumpur.

The victory was achieved with goals from Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole. It may have been the closest result on the Asia tour but Scolari saw improvements despite a pitch that, in his words 'made it difficult to play'.

'But my players tried to play,' he continued, 'and for me, I saw some players play better than the other games.

'It was not a game we needed to win. We need to play and train and the most important thing is that our players grow up in fitness and they have more confidence.

'It is better these games for me to see what they do for the future. Watching a situation, I now know I need this player or that player. For me, whether it is 4-0, 7-0 or 2-0, it is still match training. If it is 10-1 or 1-1, it is no different. I only want to group the players yes or no.

'Now is the time to test. I test whether it is best to play 4-4-2, 4-3-3, which player is best for some position for some game. Up to now the players have tried the best for Chelsea and themselves, and now it is time for me to decide.'

Among the players under the Scolari watchful eye is Florent Malouda. A half-time sub in the Malaysia game and involved in the second goal, he received a special mention.

'Today I gave more chance to Malouda because I want to know if the position he plays the best was the position he played last season. It was different than he was playing in Lyon and I want Malouda as he played in Lyon.

'Now I have my ideas [about players], not only from video or what I have seen on television. I've learnt more about personalities inside and outside the pitch.

'I have the players for exciting football and I have the players to be champions. In Moscow I make a team and then I don't want to make more than three or four changes. In Moscow I play thinking about Portsmouth.'

Scolari's team selection for the two games in Russia can be seen in action live on Chelsea TV.
