Nicolas Anelka scored his first Chelsea goal at Wigan in January, and is looking forward to a return on Sunday.

A mid-season signing from Bolton, Anelka opened his Blues account with the first goal in our 2-1 win at the JJB Stadium on January 26 (pictured).

'I remember it was a hard game in the FA Cup, a very hard game, it is always difficult to play there but we scored first, I scored first,' he recalled.

'It was a good ball from Belletti and one touch just in front of the goalkeeper. It was a good feeling because we won, and it was on a difficult pitch.'

With chances limited afterwards, Anelka only added one more goal, away at Portsmouth a week later, but in 2008/9, he is fine form, adding another goal against Pompey to the six he scored in pre-season.

The Frenchman feels he is now approaching his best as central striker between attacking wide men, but is not there yet.

'Not yet, I don't think so. I am still looking to enjoy my football. I used to play this position at Arsenal, and haven't played this way for a long time, so it's not new but I am still adapting to it.

'I liked it before and I am starting to like it again, because I am playing more games, and the more I play the more I learn how Chelsea play,' he said. 'Ithink the more I play the more confidence I will have.

A quiet character, Anelka relies heavily on an inner belief in himself - something that was lacking according to manager Luiz Felipe Scolari. The 29-year-old believes this is something that is beginning to turn around.

'When you play as a striker it is always like that, when you stop playing it is difficult to come back and play again, you need rhythm, even more when you are a striker because you need confidence. If you don't have confidence you are nothing,' he said.

With goals beginning to flow again, it looks like Anelka will be having a major confidence boost this season.
