KEEPING IT GOING
Fresh from his international duties against England mid-week, Petr Cech is ready to face Wigan at the JJB Stadium, and he knows it will be games like this that will make or break our season.
'Consistency will be the key to win the title, we don't want to drop points,' explains Cech.
'That's not only in the big games but against the likes of Wigan, Sunderland and Hull, which are all very difficult games. You need to win those as well, because you need to get the points.
'For the new clubs coming in it is a great occasion to play Chelsea.
'The players who are new to the Premier League want to show their supporters that they can do it, and on a good day they can take points from any of the teams, we need to remember this.
'Wigan is not new to the Premier League, they have a squad with a lot of experienced players and it is always hard to play at the JJB Stadium.'
After a season of finals last year, with the Carling Cup and Champions League, as well as the Barclays Premier League title being decided on the final day of the season, Cech is keen not to repeat last year's disappointment.
But he also understands that not everything in football is down to the performances on the pitch, and after an injury-stricken 2007/08, he feels Chelsea have strengthened the squad enough to combat the unpredictability of injuries.
'You need a little bit of luck during the season, you need as many players as you can to stay fit, but we have a large squad and huge quality, so this time we should be covered for the whole season.
'You always have a big motivation when you don't win something, and we came so close last season. You don't want to live that again.
The arrival Deco and José Bosingwa added to our Portuguese contingent and Cech sees plenty of positives.
'They are all quality players and they have all worked with Mr Scolari before, so they are not new to the system, they know his philosophy and they brought the passing game with them.
'When you have Deco in the game, he has great passing abilities, vision and he can be decisive.
'With Bosingwa, we already had Paulo Ferreira, [Branislav] Ivanovic and [Juliano] Belletti can still play right-back, and now with Bosingwa we have some great options on the right.
'Then you have [Ashley] Cole and [Wayne] Bridge on the left, so competition is on both sides.
'All of them are similar types of players, you can use them going forward, and you know you have someone in defence who can attack as well, which is important in modern football.
'I remember the first day of my second season here, we played Wigan when they were new to the Premier League and we scored in the last minute, but they were all over the place and putting us under pressure for the whole game.
'That is always difficult to deal with, but this time we know what we want to do and we know their team as well, so we are ready.'
