Each of our three Champions League Group A opponents were in action over the weekend.

Ahead of our visit to Transylvania on Wednesday, CFR Cluj were at home to Steaua Bucharest, in a clash of Romanian football's top two sides from last season.

The game, played on Friday night, ended in a 1-1 stalemate after Steaua had taken an early lead.

Gabriel Muresan struck a post for Cluj before Argentine striker Sebastian Dubarbier equalised in the 37th minute with a deflected shot.

The result leaves Cluj in fifth place nine games into the Romanian season.

'We could have done more as we have the ability to, but after watching my players I still believe that we can win the title,' said Cluj coach Maurizio Trombetta. 'I am satisfied with how my players played, they were 100 per cent committed.

'We created several opportunities but we made too many mistakes in front of Steaua's goal. That's what prevented us from winning this match.'

In France, Bordeaux also drew 1-1 at home against Saint-Etienne, thanks to a second-half Fernando Cavenaghi equaliser.

Coach Laurent Blanc was not too impressed with his side, who lie seventh in the French table after as many games.

'We seem unable to play two halves at the same level,' he complained. 'We planned lots of things to put pressure on them as they were not in the best condition, mentally, but we did not carry them out.

'We talked at half-time and it was better after the restart but bearing in mind the first half I don't think we deserved to win. We need more consistency.'

Roma, our final Group A opponents, were also at home and ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Atalanta.

Their goals came from former Chelsea man Christian Panucci, who also scored against Cluj a fortnight ago, and Mirko Vucinic.

'Today we were almost perfect but we have to continue like this game after game to return to being as calm and serene as we were last season in every match,' said coach Luciano Spalletti.

'A victory today was very important for the morale of the players ahead of the game in Bordeaux.'

That game will be on Wednesday night, at the same time we visit Romania for our first ever meeting with Cluj.
