LIFE PRESIDENT ATTENBOROUGH
Lord Richard Attenborough was honoured with the title of life president today (Sunday) by Peter Kenyon at Stamford Bridge.
The former director of Chelsea Football Club, who has been a Blue for over 60 years and famously trained with Tommy Lawton in 1948, took his usual seat at the ground to watch our clash with Arsenal.
But before kick off, the critically acclaimed actor, who has won two Academy Awards, four Baftas and three Golden Globes, was awarded the title of life president by chief executive Kenyon.
Building on his former title of life vice-president, Lord Attenborough was handed a commemorative plate to mark the occasion and over 60 years of support for the Blues.
'I'll sweep the Oscars off the mantel piece and put this plate right on top now,' said Lord Attenborough.
'We all use terrible clichés and say we're very honoured and very flattered, but I really am honoured and touched.
'It means as much to me as any award or honour I have been given in the past.'
It was 60 years ago when Attenborough trained with the Chelsea team to increase his physical fitness for a movie role, and becoming life president was the perfect way to celebrate such a landmark.
'I was very interested and keen to watch Chelsea, but I didn't really become passionate until 1948 when I met Tommy Lawton, who was probably the greatest England centre-forward ever.
'Then I started working with the team and Tommy Lawton and that group of boys in 1948, when I was getting fit for a movie,' explained Attenborough.
You can hear Lord Attenborough's heart-felt speech after receiving the award in Monday night's Blues News on Chelsea TV, as part of Monday Night Live with Jason Cundy and Scott Minto.
