Of Chelsea's Champions League Group A rivals, CFR Cluj were the last in action over the weekend, not playing their domestic fixture until Monday night.

The game, against the romantically titled Gaz Metan Mediaş (Methane Gas Mediaş), was the final one in the first half of the Romanian league season before the winter break.

Liga 1 resumes in February and Chelsea's opponents next Tuesday will sit fourth in the table for the next two months, six points off the top.

Cluj's variable form continued yesterday with a 2-1 home win, the winner coming in the 90th minute from Argentine striker Sebastian Dubarbier. Gabriel Muresan had opened the scoring on 33 minutes with a 30-yard free-kick. The away side equalised just a minute before Dubarbier's salvation strike.

Dan Petrescu's Unirea Urziceni are down to second in Romania after an away defeat to Steaua Bucharest.

Bordeaux, who go to Rome next week, drew 0-0 away to Sochaux in their weekend match, Fernando striking the crossbar in the closing minutes. They are fifth, eight points off the pace in France and have had their next match moved to Friday to aid Champions League preparations.

Roma are now just seven points away from a top four position in Serie A as they continued to turn their season around with a 1-0 home win over Fiorentina. The goal came from Francesco Totti.
