LAMPARD: CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY
Frank Lampard expressed the Blues' feelings following last night's loss, describing how the side felt they had been 'kicked in the teeth'.
Following a tense semi-final against Barcelona, in which Chelsea took the lead through a fantastic Michael Essien strike within 10 minutes of play, all attention today is on decisions that were made during the fixture and the players' reactions once the whistle had been blown.
'You have to understand, 11 men are trying to get to a final and when there is at least three clear penalties that haven't been given, I don't really think you can expect grown men to walk off and not say a word,' explained our vice-captain.
'Whether it looks bad or not, there wasn't any violence, people were just disappointed not to get there.'
The disappointment began with only two minutes of stoppage time to play, after the fourth official had indicated a total of four, when Andres Iniesta struck an unstoppable shot into the top right.
'Barcelona have the ability to do something whether it be in the last minute or at any time in the game, so we are disappointed we couldn't take the extra chances [on goal] but that is football.
'You sometimes understand the situation when a goal doesn't go in or when one a clear penalty decision hasn't been given, but we deserved to win the game.
'All credit to Barcelona, they are a fantastic team, but we were stronger and the whole stadium and everyone watching will see the penalty decisions. At the end of the day we have been kicked in the teeth.'
Iniesta's strike allowed Barcelona progression due to the away goal rule. Disappointment and frustration developed due to factors outside of the Blues' control, which added to Nicolas Anelka's earlier rejection of his penalty appeal.
'It [the penalty] was clear as day, the linesman was in line, the referee was near by and there is about three of those that weren't given, and I can't understand why, that's the most disappointing thing.
'The way we played, the way the game developed and then the decisions which were blatant for everyone to see, it's a very frustrating thing.
'Everyone saw it, it is blatant and in the semi-final of the Champions League you don't expect it. We don't know why those penalties weren't given.'
After such a testing performance and eventual psychological knock in not booking our place in Rome, Chelsea must now rally for our Barclays Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday.
'We have to be professionals,' Lampard added. 'It was a big disappointment but we have to be big, stand up and carry on playing.'
