STURRIDGE: COULD DO BETTER
A first goal from the first new signing to be given match action gave Chelsea supporters something to smile about, but Daniel Sturridge was less than overjoyed.
It was the 19-year-old former Manchester City player who opened the scoring in the 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders. He also played a part in the second goal, which would be enough to satisfy many debutants.
However Sturridge's words since joining Chelsea suggest a steely determination in the young Englishman to achieve great things and speaking to Chelseafc.com after Saturday's game, he once again set himself high standards.
'It doesn't matter if anyone thinks that I played well, I know I didn't myself and I know I can show the fans more of my ability once I get used to the playing style of the team,' he said.
'Obviously it is going to take time. I am a young player and I am just learning the game. I don't think I performed too well today but hopefully I can show the fans a little bit more and maybe score a few more goals.
'It is not any one thing in particular but I just want to show that I am a better player than I showed today. I know I can prove to the fans that I am a decent signing.'
Sturridge certainly showed them he can apply a decent finish and play a decent ball in to striker partner Nicolas Anelka for a goalscoring move. He was able to take some positives from the half he was on the pitch.
'I am very happy to play for the team for the first time in front of a big crowd with a good atmosphere, and I was very happy to score the first goal.
'For the second it was a good run by Nico and a good pass from him to Frank who finished very well.
'There was a lot of space behind the defenders and it is a lot different here for me. I have to get used to playing with the team because the playing style is a lot different to what Man City's is.
'You get the ball in positions where you can cause problems for the opposition more and it was a very good experience for me today.'
The run into space wide on the edge of the box and the calmly-struck, low shot could have been a typical Anelka strike. The 'young apprentice' felt the reassuring presence of the master he knew as a junior at Man City.
'Nico has been doing this for years and I was very happy to have him there today because I have been watching him closely and learning from him for a long time.
'I have been in both a front two and front three in the past and playing in different formations is what can make you become a better player. Playing up front alone, you learn how to play the game a bit more and when you are playing with someone it just becomes easier.
'It is a good formation we are playing at the moment and it worked today because we won and kept a clean sheet.'
