PRE-MATCH BRIEFING: WIGAN ATHLETIC V CHELSEA
WE HAVE HISTORY
The Blues are looking for a fifth successive away league win at Wigan to maintain our 100 per cent record at the DW Stadium, formerly the JJB.
The run was preceded by a sparkling FA Cup replay win there in January 1985 - Wigan's first defeat in that competition at home since 1965. Paul Canoville and Pat Nevin tore into a home side that was, as their manager Harry McNally put it, 'Diabolical from a-z.' It was Kerry Dixon's afternoon, though, the striker scoring four times in a 5-0 win (pictured below), and McNally was clearly impressed. 'If Mark Hateley is worth a million,' he said, 'Dixon is priceless.' (Talk about damning with faint praise.)

Typically for the time, bantam skirmisher David Speedie, who had opened the scoring, found himself the centre of a fight and was substituted before he could be sent off.
The Latics' only win (4-2) against Chelsea on their own patch was a few years earlier in the 1981/82 League Cup third round.
