'CHELSEA HERE CHELSEA THERE' BOOK SIGNING
Chelsea's legendary striker Kerry Dixon will sign copies of a new book that celebrates one of his greatest days. He's in the Megastore before Sunday's Liverpool game.
'Chelsea are back' was one of the anthems that heralded the club's memorable promotion back to the top flight in May 1984 after five seasons in the wilderness, but it wasn't until the following August that the words of the song were truly proven.
A new book by supporters Mark Worrall, Kelvin Barker and David Johnstone capture the game, the moment and the era when a revitalised Chelsea showed everyone it could live in the big time once more.
The game was away to Arsenal, a Saturday morning kick-off making it the first match of the season. The moment was Kerry Dixon's equaliser in front of a Clock End rammed with blue-shirted supporters. The era was one very different in many ways from today. A time remembered fondly by Chelsea supporters was problematic for football as a whole.
Chelsea Here Chelsea There, the title another song heard on the day, was published on the 25th anniversary of the 1-1 draw at Arsenal. It has the game as its central theme but widens the focus so the action can be seen in its surroundings, which included nation-changing industrial disputes, George Michael in his pomp, Liverpool FC similarly on top of their game and casual fashion culture (which Liverpool fans might, or might not have started) dominant on the football terraces.
The book is impressive in its research. Even fans who consider this their era and have the knowledge to match will find memories revived.
'When I was writing it, I'd disappear into my office in the evening looking at newspaper online archives from 8 until 2, getting lost in the 80s,' admits Mark Worrall who has written several Chelsea fan-based books.
'Some of the best feedback we have had has come from younger people who have sat there with their dads in the pub and heard what it was like watching Chelsea back in the day and wanted to know all about it.
'It's a time when 20,000 Chelsea supporters in an era when there were no mobile phones and no world wide web all turned up for an 11.30 kick-off and 15,000 of them paid on the day.'

Kelvin Barker (also previously published on Chelsea) who pens the opening chapter telling the story of our progress in Division Two that led to the Highbury highlight, says:
'For that generation of Chelsea fans that game is a special moment in time, a bit like when we won the league at Bolton and when we won the FA Cup against Middlesbrough.
'Anyone who watches that Kerry goal and was there at the time can't help but get goose bumps, remembering how you celebrated, how you got home.'
David Johnstone, known to many Chelsea supporters through his cfcuk fanzine, describes himself as playing the Makelele role in the book's creation. He adds:
'That goal, along with Peter Osgood's in the 1970 Cup Final replay, is one of the most iconic in Chelsea history. The whole club - players and supporters - all there in that one moment of magic.
'Ask Kerry which of his 193 goals stands out for him and it will be the first he mentions. It was all about shutting everyone else up in that ground who didn't have a blue scarf on.'
Dixon is one of a many interviewed in the book. The Chelsea mascot on the day of the game was tracked down by Worrall and his photo collection from Highbury adds plenty of colour. There is a chapter of fan contributions and the vast majority of the Chelsea players involved that day, including David Speedie, Pat Nevin and captain Colin Pates, share their memories.
Even Dale Jasper, who was a youthful stand-in for injured John Bumstead, was tracked down living above a pub in south London. That was after an acquaintance Worrall made at the Moscow Champions League Final revealed himself to be Jasper's brother-in-law on later learning of the book.
Chelsea Here Chelsea There is available in the Megastore at Stamford Bridge priced £12.99.
Kerry Dixon will be signing copies in the Megastore on Sunday between noon and 2pm.
