Neither John Terry nor Nicolas Anelka were able to clear up totally the confusion over who scored Sunday's winning goal - though the captain is keen to claim his first goal of the season and break a personal duck.

The 76th minute header that beat Edwin van der Sar and decided Sunday's big match was the result of Frank Lampard's free-kick being attacked by Terry and Anelka. Although it was impossible for the captain to see what happened after he back-headed it on-target, he will be pleased the goal is widely credited as his.

'I was looking at the stats before the game and I have never scored against Man United home or away,' Terry said after the match. 'But Nico was brilliant in the game and he deserved it.

'I got a touch on it but I think maybe Nico got a second touch on it, but I am still claiming it!' he laughed.

'I think I touched the ball, but I don't know what happened after that, but maybe John can tell the best,' was Anelka's assessment, adding to the puzzle.

Chelsea v Man United

What mattered far more to both players was three points and a five-point lead over Manchester United.

'That is exactly what I wanted going into the game. I stressed it in my programme notes, and we have been working on it all week,' said Terry.

'It wasn't the best of games but I think overall we deserved it. It was another clean sheet for us, we defended well and in the second half we had the lads in attack and midfield tracking back and working hard for the team.'

'I just got my body between him and ball,' was the captain's view on a first-half challenge on Antonio Valencia that the away side believed deserved a penalty. 'I am glad the ref didn't give it but I didn't think it was anyway.'

'Manchester United played good football and they had some chances but we stayed compact and mean in defence and managed to score one goal,' added Anelka.

'Man United is a big rival for the league. You never know what is going to happen but it is always good to be five points clear of them.'
