KAKUTA'S FRIDAY FINAL
In-form Gael Kakuta has been reflecting on reaching the Uefa Under 19 European Championship Final in his native northern France.
The Chelsea player scored the equaliser against Croatia to set up a showdown with Spain, the side that defeated Kakuta's French Under 17 side two years ago. He is acutely aware of the opposition's qualities.
'Spain are not our old friends, they are our enemies,' he said. 'Two years ago they trashed us 4-0 so it will be a good revenge for us.
'They take good care of the ball and are very patient. We will try to work on that. It will be a good match. After what they did to us two years ago, everybody is looking forward to it.'
The 19-year-old has been in exceptional form during the tournament, contributing superb solo goals and clever assists, though he felt a sense of guilt after surrendering possession in the build-up to Croatia's opener in the semi.
'It is because of me we conceded that goal. I miscontrolled the ball, and after that came a foul and the goal,' he explained.
'We put pressure on our own shoulders by conceding early. After that goal we started to take over and set the pace of the game and everything went fine. During the game I thought we had a way to win this match easily. Then we moved the ball around. We were patient and it paid off. With the three weeks of preparation we went through, we also finish the games strongly.'
Croatia goalkeeper Matej Delac, who has signed a pre-contract agreement to join us, was upset not to be in the Final but was pleased with his side's achievements in France.
'France are a good team; I'm disappointed but we gave it our best shot. I am satisfied with my performance even if you can always do better,' said the 17-year-old.
'It's not only down to me but it's thanks to the whole team," he added. 'If you'd told me that before the tournament, I'd have thought you were crazy. To reach the semi-finals is something else.'
France will meet Spain in the Final on Friday evening. You will be able to read a report here on the Official Chelsea Website afterwards.
